1962WinterReported from various, widespread areas in the state, but apparently in very reduced numbers as compared with past five winters.
1963WinterReported from Big Stone, Stevens, Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Washington and St. Louis Counties. Largest concentration was in St. Louis Co., between Sax and Zim, where 17 were seen on a single ten-mile roadside count, Jan Green et al.

1983Winter Fifty-eight individuals were reported with all but three from the east one-half of the state. The west reports were Marshall, all winter (KSS), Wilkin 12-7, 2-12 (SDM) and Wilkin 2-23 (MRBA). Why is this species scarce on Minnesota prairies while it seems common in the Dakota's?

1991Winter Reported from 34 counties (33 l.y.) in all regions, but absent from the far western tier of counties except Lac qui Parle CBC. This species was especially numerous in Pine, Aitkin and nearby counties in December, with as many as 39 reported Aitkin 12/28 WN, but these large numbers were gone in January. Statewide CBC total of 93 (60 l.y.), 26 of which were on Sax Zim CBC.

1992Winter The lowest numbers in over 10 years. Reported from only 16 counties (34 l.y.) as far west as Kandiyohi and Beltrami, including only 5 northern counties: the Bemidji, Crosby, Sax/Zim, and Carlton CBCs, and Aitkin mob. There were no reports in the western regions. Highest daily count anywhere only 2 (39 l.y.). CBC total only 22 (93 l.y.).

1994Summer One tattered individual observed 6/15,16 in Winona JPo. This species has now been reported for four consecutive summers.
1994Fall Hawk Ridge count: 1,011, a new record high. Early north 8/19 Becker BBe, 9/4 Cook SOL, 10/7 Polk DS. Early south 9/24 Wabasha CS, 10/9 Hennepin SC, 10/20 Rice TB.
1994Winter Reported from a record 43 counties throughout the state including western regions where infrequently reported in winter. Approximately 137 individuals were reported by seasonal contributors. An additional 249 birds were recorded on CBCs, although there may be some overlap with individuals on seasonal reports. Remarkable numbers were present in the open bog area of southern St. Louis Co. where 139 counted on the Sax/Zim CBC (this is the highest number ever reported in winter). Although 100+ were still present on 1/7, these birds were almost entirely gone by late January. West region reports were entirely from December. Overwintering noted in Carver and Winona, and probably Dakota and Goodhue. Many reports in late February where not reported in mid-winter, suggesting an early northbound movement.
